Three guys with thighs out to the next county glided silently past Steven as he pedaled uphill. The calves of the fourth rider were ropes of muscle as he vanished around a broad sweeping left-hand curve.
It’s days like this on the bike that Steven knows he is never ever going to set a land-speed record.
Just a personal best.
On Tuesday, Steven will be 61. Today, he rode 30+ miles on the bike.

Jacquela and Steven carried the paint samples for the garage exterior out to Emerald Hill.
Today was overcast. We need to see the samples in bright sun.
Barn Red is the horizontal strip of Hardieboard at the top of the samples, with the yellow unpainted end.
The two colors to the left, and the third at lower right, skew toward orange. We are not going to do orange in a state that is crazy about burnt orange. The red sample in the middle at right reads maroon.
